Member & Stakeholder Message

Friday, February 7, 2014

As Chairs of the Boards for Habitat Brampton Caledon, Toronto, and York Region, we are thrilled to announce that on the evening of Wednesday, February 5th, the corporate members of our three Habitat for Humanity affiliates voted in favour to amalgamate into a single new affiliate.

The new affiliate will proudly serve families living in the communities and regions of Bradford/West Gwillimbury, Brampton, Caledon, Toronto, and York. The organization will continue to focus on: working with families and volunteers to build safe and decent Habitat homes; being a passionate advocate for more affordable housing in our communities; and of course, providing affordable homeownership for low-income, hardworking families. Our three affiliates are unified in our common vision of a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live, and have come together with an ambitious goal of creating the capacity to build 100 homes per year.

David Sauve, who is currently the Chair of Habitat York Region’s Board of Directors, will be Chair of the newly-amalgamated affiliate and lead a Board made up of five Directors from each of our three affiliates. The CEO will be Ene Underwood who you have all been getting to know since she was hired less than a year ago with the support of our three Boards. Legal documents have now been submitted to the Public Guardian and Trustee and Ministry of Government Services with an expected date for legal amalgamation of April 1, 2014. Meanwhile, staff and volunteers will continue to work hard on building more Habitat homes in our communities and use this amalgamation to propel our efforts to deliver more homes to families.

In the coming weeks and months, you will hear more about the transition to become an amalgamated affiliate ‒ and most importantly, to build more homes together. Thank you once again for your ongoing support of Habitat for Humanity. We are excited to partner with you and thousands of other volunteers, donors, supporters, and families in our shared commitment of providing more safe, decent, and affordable homes across our communities.

"I found Habitat Toronto is a very friendly organization for low income families. No interest, no down payment, training for home ownership, the best thing is you can own a house even if you are on a low income.

We thank God and thank the staff of Habitat for Humanity Toronto who give us this opportunity. It's our dream; it's the goal of our life."
